Drawings are the starting point for the Paper Textiles of Carole Bury. These are made of painted and varnished tissue paper, containing both hand and machine embroidery.
Fossils, geology and woodlands have provided ample resources for much of her work. Recently the Migratory Journeys of birds and fish have captured her imagination and the seeds of new work are beginning to germinate, with charcoal drawings and samples for large Paper Textiles. These incredibly difficult and long journeys are awe inspiring and deserve monumental work that is larger in scale and yet contain intimate areas of close stitching, helping to convey the concept of near detail with open spaces. It is quite intentional that direct similarities with our own journeys, both the spiritual and the physical, are apparent.
Carole Bury studied at Cheltenham College of Art (1977-78) and Manchester Polytechnic (1978-1981) studying Fine Art Embroidery.
On moving to London in 1981, she was quickly involved with Fibre Art and the 62 Group of Textile Artists; In 1984 she was invited by the British Crafts Centre to be part of a Paper Exhibition, which sealed her long lasting passion with paper.
She was recognized with her first one woman show in 1985 at the Anatol Orient Gallery, opening on the eve of her leaving for Papua New Guinea for 3 years. With her husband, she lived and worked at the National Arts School in Port Moresby.
In 2002 she returned to Gloucestershire and now lives and works in a small Cotswold Village where her surroundings of woodlands and open vistas inspire her. Her drawings are expansive and contain inner dialogues finding solutions that are easily transposed to the Paper Textiles.
Carole has strong links with 'Nature in Art' in Gloucester, and will be at Art in Action in July 2011, with the Museum.
Her Woodland work is regularly exhibited at Bedgebury Pinetum in Kent, where she lived for 10 years with her 2 young children.
