Alistair
Crawford studied at Glasgow School of Art (1962-66), taught Textile
Design, University of Leeds from 1968, then moved to Coventry
University 1971 to teach Graphic Design. In 1974 became Lecturer
in Graphic Art at Aberystwyth University where he also began publishing
Art History and curating exhibitions, becoming Head of Department
in 1986. In 1990 he became the first Professor of Art in the history
of Wales and in 1993 instigated the new School of Art and the
School of Art Gallery & Museum. From 1995 to 2008 he was Research

As an art historian Alistair has curated international
exhibitions and published extensively on art in several languages,
mainly on the history of photography. Recently he has transferred
his experiences as an artist into storytelling performances. As
an artist he exhibits as a painter, printmaker and photographer
using subject matter which ranges from landscape and architecture
to figurative work, both abstract and representational. A significant
aspect is a preoccupation with the Spirit of Place. He has exhibited
widely in the UK, Europe and the USA and is represented in collections
world wide. In 2000 he was elected Honorary Fellow of the Royal
Society of Painter-Printmakers ‘in recognition of services
to the art of printmaking’.
