Paul Aston was born in the village of Awre on the banks of the river
Severn in the Forest of Dean. He trained at Leicester College of
Art and Chelsea School of Art to obtain his MA. He was Abbey Major
Scholar at the British School at Rome and lectured in fine art at
the Aegean School on the island
of Paros. He returned to England
in 1974.
Paul says, ‘I love the English
landscape and sky. For five years or so, I painted landscape in
a naturalistic way. The nearer I got to painting what landscape
‘looked’ like, the further away I got from what landscape
‘felt’ like. There ceased to be a correlation for
me. So I had to find a vehicle that would show me what I was experiencing.
I started to make what is called sculpture, though to me they’re
three dimensional paintings.’
